eBay Keyword Optimisation Secrets Revealed.

If you want to effectively sell on ebay and achieve the maximum exposure of your item to the highest possible number of potential buyers, you need to get your item NOTICED - there is only ONE way to do this and that is using Search Keyword Optimisation in your eBay Item Title.

Arguably the most important part of an e Bay online auction listing. Get the correct search keywords and you'll reap the benefits - but! Get them wrong or too "general" and your listing may as well be invisible.

If you sell on eBay your item title is the most important part of your listing. This is where you pitch your sale by using search keywords - the key to a successful listing is getting the correct keyword optimisation which puts "your" item in front of as many buyers as possible.

What is a Keyword? Simply put, any and every word you use in your Auction listing title and description is a keyword. The "Book" definition is:

"A significant word or phrase in the title, subject headings, contents notes, abstract, or text of a record in an online catalog or database which can be used as a search term in a free-text search to retrieve all the records containing it."

The big difference between eBay and the regular Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo etc is a Buyer can search eBay by both title and description for any item. However, the majority of buyers will perform a first search by item title and depending on the results will then try a description search as well.

Therefore, your e Bay online auction title is the first priority but if you lace your ebay description with the Top eBay Search Keywords, you're dramatically improving the status of your listing and more importantly - the visbility in buyers searches.

You only get a limited number of spaces for the Item title (55 Characters) which makes it even more important to get the right search keywords in that space to describe your item. Here's where a few PowerSeller Top Tips or Secrets on keyword optimisation come into play.

Your Item Title does not have to make perfect sense.
Research your competitions Item Title.

Your item title does not have to make perfect sense? That's correct. Remember, we are trying to get search keyword optimisation for your item, not trying to write a story about it! Let's say you want to sell a Jumper. The Item Title might look like so:

this is a wonderful sweater from H&M

The above was an actual e Bay online auction listing. If we break it down, we have 7 Keywords of which 2 are searchable to buyers and no Keyphrases. The problem is, none of the Keywords rate very highly in the eBay auction site Top Searches or Top Keyword Searches and the chances of the ebay seller making alot of money are very slim - at best it is only really going to be seen in the last few minutes on the category results page.

Let's face it, the Title does it absolutely no justice at all!!! When was the last time you did an eBay search for the word "this" or "wonderful"? Now, let's spice it up a bit with some top search keyword optimisation!

Red H&M Sweater, Cardigan Size 8 - HOT

The same listing, completely re-hashed but with e Bay online auction top search keywords that work - all the info for the keywords was taken from the listing! We now have 7 proven Keywords and Keyphrases available to buyers. The number 8 on its own is a very Hot Search Keyword as it is a womens clothing size - women search by size on eBay and that's a proven fact! By adding the word HOT at the end, this is also a proven tactic which naturally draws a buyers attention.

It's the simple changes that can make huge differences to your listing and ultimately your sales profits when you sell on eBay.

Researching your competitions eBay auction listing title is also an absolute must but which competitors should you be looking at? Any PowerSeller worth his salt will tell you that you need to research your item on eBay as the marketplace is very competitive and in any category, you will find alot of other sellers offering the same item as you.

However, you can instantly narrow your research time down to a bare minimum by looking in the right place and at the right people or sellers. You need to be researching other PowerSellers who are offering the same items as you. Why? The answer is simple, they are PowerSellers and have done all the leg work and carried out the prelim sales and marketing research for you.

Hopefully that made sense - but, you can also look at it this way. If you start researching any seller and by that I mean your average "sell an item" every now and again type seller, you will end up with an average "sell an item every now and then" type research data - to be blunt, you won't end up with anything worthwhile.

The ebay PowerSellers have already done all the leg work for the item and have the top search keywords, optimised keyword titles etc - all you need to do is check their listing title, description and note down the techniques and keywords they utilise to get a buyers interest. Once you have that information under your belt:

Research Complete - Selling Begin!

Top Tip: As a general rule, most PowerSellers use "buy it now" features as well as auctions. If you carry out an advanced search for an item and put the total number of bids at 1 and tick the completed listings box - you'll get a list of predominately "buy it now" items. Check out the highest priced green coloured (Red means unsold) listings and find the top PowerSellers to research.

OK, we've covered a bit of ground in our eBay Search keyword Optimisation but I want to quickly take a look at and warn you of a very easy trap which you can fall into.

How Not To List An Item on eBay - Keyword Negatives.

You will see and hear many eBay Sellers promoting the use of and listing your item by using Keyword Negatives or deflection in your eBay auction listing title.

Now, yes it is widely used and can have dramatic results on your items promotion BUT it is against eBay Policy and is known as Keyword Spamming. This carries stiff penalties if you are caught by eBay.

What exactly is Keyword Spamming? Here is eBays definition:

Keyword Spamming

Keyword Spamming occurs when members place brand names or other inappropriate keywords in a title or description to gain attention or divert members to a listing.

Breaches of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

  • Listing cancellation
  • Limits on account privileges
  • Account suspension
  • Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
  • Loss of PowerSeller status

What would a Keyword Spamming Listing look like? Here is an example:

Let's say you want to sell an xbox, you might list the item like so:

x box with 5 top games unused

As before, the listing above was taken from eBay and is perfectly OK as it stands and does not violate any policies.

Note: I specifically chose this one because of the first word - x box. BE CAREFUL when you list items like this because x box can be read as 2 Search Keywords! Better to put both versions of the spelling x box, xbox in the same title or just go with the Top Search Keyword for your item which in this case was xbox - which funnily enough makes the Top 10 for Search Keywords on eBay.com!

OK, Back to the lesson and the listing in general.

Possibly 3 Search Keywords with x box being debatable! But now we are going to change the item and use Keyword Spamming by adding some simple negatives or deflection under the guise of Search Keyword Optimisation.

We could quite easily get the following:

xbox + 5 New Games - Not PSP, xbox 360, ipod

I've only used 44 Characters in the above notional listing and once again the eBay auction listing has dramatically increased in visibility to buyers BUT it is now violating eBay Keyword Spam Policy by our addition of the Keywords added above and highlighted in RED. We are now using inappropriate keywords to gain attention and divert members to our listing.

Although your intentions may be good by telling potential buyers what your item is not! Be careful and try and avoid this type of listing format as it can and will eventually catch you out.

OK, I hope the above has given you some food for thought. We will be looking at other PowerSeller Secrets and ways to spice up and improve your Item Title and Listing Descriptions.

As a general rule, take your time and do your research here on The Auction Spider Top eBay Keyword Search Pages.

The addition of just one Top Optimised Keyword to your e Bay online auction Item Title, could mean the difference between a ghost listing that no one sees or an Attention Seeking Money Grabber which simply attracts Buyers.
